Entire process a ‘political witch-hunt’: Namal

Commenting on the arrest of his brother Yoshitha Rajapaksa and four others on Saturday, Namal Rajapaksa MP said yesterday that the entire process was a ‘political witch-hunt.’

Rajapaksa who visited the remand prison in Colombo to see his brother yesterday, told journalists that the government while pretending to the world that they were following good governance and democracy was hunting political opponents locally.

“There is an effort to arrest a few persons and scuttle the efforts of the opposition. They are arresting innocent people,” he added.

On a sarcastic note Rajapaksa said: “They are deriving satisfaction by taking revenge on the opposition members.

These acts are continuing from grassroots level. We are telling this government to make a similar effort to give benefits to the public and develop the country”.

Meanwhile, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa too visited the prison in the company of several opposition politicians.

Speaking to the media, the former President accused that some elements in the government were trying to take revenge from his sons.

“Remand me instead,” he challenged. The Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID) of police on Saturday arrested Navy Lieutenant Yoshitha Rajapaksa and four others over alleged financial irregularities at the Carlton Sports Network (CSN).

The Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court remanded all five till February 11 when they were produced in court. The five are charged under the Money Laundering Act.
