Lanka's Himasha Eshan wins 100m event in a record time

Sri Lanka won four gold medals in the athletic competition of the South Asian Games which began yesterday at the Indira Gandhi Stadium Guwahati while they also won a Gold medal each in swimming and cycling events.

Sri Lanka's Himasha Eshan won the 100metres event in a record time of 10.71 seconds breaking the record of 10.29 seconds set up by Sri Lanka's Chinthaka de Soyza in the 1999 SA Games in Chennai.

Himasha won the gold while Maldives Shahid Hassan won the Silver in a time of 10.41 seconds while Lanka's Mohamed Ashrafu won the bronze medal in a time of 10.69 seconds.

Sri Lanka's Rumeshika Ratnayake won the womens' 100 metres event in a time of 11.71 seconds pushing India's Subhani Nanda into second place. Sri Lanka's Manjula Kumara won the Gold in the high jump event with a jump of 2.17 metres while Nimali Liyanarachchi won the Gold medal in the 800metres event with a time 2:09.07 seconds while Gayanthika Abeyratne won the Silver with a time of 2:09.64 seconds.

This is the first time that Sri Lanka had won a Gold medal in the 800 metres event in the South Asian Games.

The Sri Lanka Table Tennis team which took part in the South Asian Games gave an excellent display to win one silver medal and 10 bronze medals. The silver medal was won by Udaya Ranasinghe and Rohan Sirisena in the men's doubles while in the women's doubles Ishara Madurangi and Ruwini Kannangara won bronze medals which was conducted at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex, Shilon, India yesterday.

Udaya Ranasinghe, Nirmala Jayasinghe and Rohan Sirisena also won the doubles. The men's singles bronze medals were won Udaya Ransinghe and Rohan Sirisena, in the mens' doubles - Rohan Sirisena and Chameera Ginige also won bronze medal while Ishara Madurangi and Erandi Waruysawithamna won bronze medals in the womens' doubles.

In the mixed doubles Rohan Sirisena and Ishara Madurangi won bronze medals. According to the Manager of the Table Tennis team, this is the highest number of medals by Lankan Table Tennis Team at a SA Games.

In the archery men's final, Sri Lanka clashed with India in which India obtained 161 points while Sri Lanka could get only 157 and settle for a silver medal.

The Silver medals winning Lankan team comprises Nipuna Senaratne and Rajeev de Silva. In the women's archery final, India won the Gold medal with 156 points while Sri Lanka clinched the Silver medal with 104 points.

The Lankan women's team comprise Dilhara Salgadu, Anuradha Karunaratne and Suchini Ubesiri.
