The Maha Sangha can play a great role towards satisfying the thirst for Buddhism by people the world over. The Ven. Rassagala Seevali Thera in particular can render a great service in this regard, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said.

He was addressing a 'daham hamuwa' at the Thai-Sri Lanka Buddhist Cultural Centre in Heiyanthuduwa to mark the donation of 119 gilded Samadhi Buddha statues to the Centre, for distribution to Buddhist temples across the sialnd.

The donation was made in response to a request by the Ven. Rassagala Seevali Thera, to the Viharadhipati of the Watt Thejihiram Viharaya, Ven. Prakrut Paisan Chayani Thera.

The Speaker said there was a great demand for a pristine form of the Buddhist philosophy throughout the word. People visit Sri Lanka daily in search of the Dhamma, he said.

Jayasuriya also said the Buddhist ecclesiastic code was a matter concerning the Maha Sangha, led by the Mahanayake Theras, and the government would never interfere with it.

The Ven. Prakrut Paisan Chayani Thera of Thailand said Sri Lankans had always protected Buddhism in its pristine form. He said he was happy to forge cultural relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand.
