The Constitutional Council yesterday nominated Senior DIG Pujith Jayasundera as the country’s 34th Inspector General of Police.

He succeeds N. K Illangakoon who retired from the post on April 11. The Constitutional Council has already communicated its decision to President Maithripala Sirisena. Pujith Senadhi Bandara Jayasundera, 56, was nominated as the next IGP by the Constitutional Council yesterday evening.

IGP Jayasundera is a senior most high ranking police officer with a long service in the department.

An old boy of Dharmaraja College, Kandy, Jayasundera joined the Police Force in May 1985, and has held a number of key posts, including those of Senior DIG, Range I and Range III. He has also served as the Director of the PNB for three years.
