‘Govt unable to salvage small company like SriLankan Airlines’

The government’s decision to amalgamate SriLankan Airlines with a private entity reflects its inability to run the government, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Propaganda Secretary Tilvin Silva said.

He questioned as to why the government could not earn profits, if a private company could earn profits through SriLankan Airlines.

Silva made these observations yesterday in response to a question by media personnel at a press conference at the the JVP Head Office in Battaramulla.

“This government pledged to take the country out of its pathetic situation during the election period,” Silva said. “But this government has not been able to salvage a small institution like SriLankan Airlines leave alone the country”.

He said that this government has curtailed the relief granted to people and increased the burden of taxes.

Silva added that this was the first time VAT was increased to a rate of 15 percent.

He said the government had to increase the salaries of public servants due to their demand but not voluntarily.

“The salaries was increased only of the public servants. But the government simultaneously increased the tax on all people in the country,” he said.
