Retired officers condemn CM's behaviour

Retired officers of the Sri Lanka Navy and the Army condemned the act of Eastern Province Chief Minister Nazeer Ahamed reprimanding Sampur Navy Camp Commandant Captain Ranjith Premaratne in the presence of US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Atul Keshap at the Sampur Maha Vidyalaya.

They said the Eastern Navy camps do not come under the Eastern Chief Minister but under the President, the Defence Ministry and the Ministry Secretary.

They demanded that Ahamed should apologise to the war heroes.

They also said the political authority should take suitable steps against this degrading treatment to a senior officer.

They said the Eastern Chief Minister should appreciate the Navy and other security forces for their commitment to create a peaceful atmosphere for politicians to engage in politics fearlessly sacrificing nearly lives of 30,000 members of security forces.

Rear Admiral Ananda Peiris (Retd) also condemned this.Western Provincial Councillor Major Pradeep Undugoda (Retired) said the Chief Minister reprimanded Captain Ranjith Premaratne in English deliberately so that the US Ambassador would understand it.

"The Eastern Province Governor accompanied the US ambassador honouring the Navy which constructed a laboratory, a computer lab and other buildings for Sampur Maha Vidyalaya in an area which was under Navy control, for 400 Tamil students. Chief Minister Ahamed attended the event without an invitation," he said.

They made these observations at a press conference held at the former President's Political Office at Nelum Pedesa in Battaramulla.

Rear Admiral H.R. Amaraweera (Retd) also spoke.
