Former Embilipitiya ASP to be reinstated

The National Police Commission (NPC) has decided to reinstate former Embilipitiya Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) D.W.C. Dharmarathna into the Police Service after considering an appeal made by him.Dharmarathna was reinstated into the Police Service on August 4, NPC Secretary Ariyadasa Cooray said.

Dharmarathna was arrested in connection with the clash between Police and residents which resulted in the death of Sumith Prasanna Jayawardena, a 29-year-old resident of Embilipitiya in January this year. Cooray said the Commission met on Thursday and approved to reinstate Dharmarathna in response to a recommendation the Commission received from the IGP. “According to the Establishment Code of the Police, the ASP has the right to request for reinstatement. He had requested to be reinstated into service. However, the ASP would be removed from the operational division and would be assigned in a functional division at the Police headquarters such as Finger Print Department or HR Department,” he said.

Dharmarathna was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on February 2 in connection with the death of Jayawardene and was released on bail by the Embilipitiya Magistrate’s Court on June 2.
