Wakkumbura to resign as SLFP Kalawana organiser

Ratnapura District UPFA Parliamentarian Janaka Wakkumbura said he will tender his resignation from the post of SLFP organiser for Kalawana electorate.

He made this announcement at a meeting at his residence on August 24. He however said he would retain his  membership in the SLFP and requested his supporters too not to abandon the SLFP.

Wakkumbura said he had to take this decision because longstanding members of the SLFP had been expelled form SLFP organiser posts and the party they loved had been him jacked by some other group. He said the SLFP launched by late Prime Minister S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike in 1952 was protected until 2015 upto former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s tenure as Party President. Although President Maithripala Sirisena promised to protect party principles and policies after gaining the leadership mantle he had not said he would set up a coalition government with the UNP.

Addressing the gathering he said “I have won due to the support extended by you. Today the party has been taken over by some outsiders. I request you to be patient and remain in the party fold until we gain control of it once again”. Former Chairmen of the Kalawana and Ayagama Pradesheeya Sabhas and members of the Kalawana SLFP central organisation attended the meeting.
