Bus driver who withdrew Rs. 200,000 from stolen ATM card nabbed

 

A 40-year-old private bus driver who had robbed an ATM card of a passenger and withdrawn Rs. 200,000 from it at various intervals to purchase various goods was apprehended by the Matara Magistrate.

This follows a complaint made to the Matara Police by the commuter who was the card owner.

The card owner, a 50-year-old government servant resident of Nuwara Eliya said in his complaint that he travelled in this private bus operating on the Colombo - Tangalle route to Matara with his daughter on August 31 to enable the daughter to participate in a sports event held at the Uyanwatte Stadium. When he got ready to travel back to Nuwara Eliya that afternoon, he noticed that his ATM card of a private bank account was missing and lodged a complaint at the Matara Police.

He had also said he found that a person who had robbed his card had withdrawn Rs. 50,000 using it. Later, Police investigations found that Rs. 200,000 had been withdrawn from the ATM card. Police using CCTV data recorded at various shops, banks and filing stations' traced the bus driver to Tangalle and arrested him.

Police have also recovered the ATM card used by him.

The suspect was due to be produced before the Matara Magistrate.
