The Most Venerable Maha Mahopadyaya Aggamahapanditha Kotugodadhammawasa Maha Thera, former President of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Sect in a message of condolence on behalf of the Maha Sangha on the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, states that his death is a loss to the entire Buddhist world.
The message: “Sri Lanka and Thailand are two nations which are bounded with strong historical, religious and traditional relationship for more than 2300 years.
We remind with gratitude that Thailand has played a great role on the re-establishment and preservation of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. The Buddhist Sangha Sects of Siam, Amarapura and Ramanna was introduced to Sri Lanka from Thailand and Myanmar which both were known as Swarnabhoomi at the time.
All Sri Lankans, especially Buddhists hereby convey our deepest sorrow at the passing away of King Bhumibol Adulyadej after reigning for 70 years. We honourably recall his great leadership and immense services for the development of Thailand and Buddhism.
His helping was not only limited to Thai people but also for entire Buddhist communities of other nations.
He was a special state ruler who won the people’s hearts and popularity until the end of his life. We consider this event as one of the biggest tragedy for the entire Buddhist world.
May the Great Noble King Bhumibol Adulyadej attain Nibbana. This is the fervent wish of the Maha Sangha and all Buddhists of Sri Lanka.”
