Revokes infamous Brownrigg Gazzette notification of 1818: President grants ‘National Hero’ status to Uva-Wellasse rebels

President Maithripala Sirisena issuing a special decree yesterday named the leaders in Uva-Wellasse Great rebellion of 1817- 1818, heroes of the nation.

The President revoked the infamous Gazette Notification that condemned Uva –Wellasse rebels as traitors issued by then Governor of British Colonial Ceylon, Robert Brownrigg on January 1, 1818.

Under Brownrigg’s gazette notification, properties of the rebels were also confiscated.

British Colonial Government had termed rebel leaders Kappetipola Disawe, Godagedara Rate Adhikaram, Ketakala Mohottale, Katharagama Maha Bethme Rate Raala, Kathragama Kuda Bethme Raterala, Palangolle Mohottale, Wattekaale Mohottaale, Polgahagedara Rehehenaraale, Poserewatte Vidaane, Kiwulegedara Mohottaale, Kalugamuwe Mohottaale, Udumadura Mohottaale, Kohukumbure Walawwe Rate Raala, Kohukumbure Walawwe Mohottala, Butawe Rateraala, Bhaginigahawela Rate Raala, Mahabadulle Gammane Rate Raala, Bulupitiye Mohottala and Palle Malheyaye Gamathiraala as traitors.

With a special statement signed by him yesterday, President Sirisena annulled the Brownrigg’s gazette notification while conferring official “National Hero” titles to Uva-Wellasse rebels who fought against the British colonial rule.
