Hirunika not present in Court, lawyer says admitted to hospital

Colombo district UNF Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra indicted in the Colombo High Court for abducting a youth using a defender, was yesterday not present before Court. Her lawyers informed Court that she was admitted to hospital following a sudden illness.

Senior Counsel Ajith Pathirana with Counsel Yalith Wijesurendra appearing on behalf of Premachandra tendered in Court a medical certificate citing that she was in hospital for vestibular gastritis.

The case was fixed for trial on April 26 and 27.

Premachandra and eight others were granted bail by the Colombo High Court for their alleged involvement in the abduction of a youth using a defender belonging to Premachandra on December 21, 2015. Apart from the abduction charges, the nine accused have been charged on 29 counts by the Attorney General including threatening, assaulting and intimidating Amila Priyankara after abducting him in Dematagoda.

The accused indicted are Hirunika Premachandra, Kelum Niranjana, Kasun Malinda, Ruwan Pushpakumara, Mohammed Rizwan, Pasindu Sanjeewa, P.S. Abeysiriwardena and Jeganadacal. The eight other accused are the security officers and supporters of Premachandra. Priyankara alleged that he was abducted and assaulted by a group of people who came in a black Defender to Dematagoda on December 21, 2015.

Senior State Counsel Janaka Bandara appeared for the Attorney General.
