Over 550 Army deserters arrested in single day

An island-wide combined raid conducted by the Police and the Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (SLCMP) on Thursday led to the arrest of 563 Army personnel who are Absent Without Official Leave (AWOL) or considered having deserted their posts.

The Army media stated the arrests on Thursday were the biggest ever recorded in a single day.

The raids had been conducted after the expiration of the Ministry of Defence declared general amnesty for absentees.

The general amnesty ended on December 31, 2016.

The Army has so far arrested one officer and 960 other rankers after the general amnesty period ended.

During the general amnesty period, 10 officers and 7,816 other rankers have reached the regiments and obtained legal discharge from respective places, Military Spokesman, Brigadier Roshan Seneviratne said.
