Left hand batsman Mohammed Najath slammed an unbeaten century and skipper Sajith Sameera returned a match bag of nine wickets to help Zahira College crush Anuradhapura Central College by 244 runs at Maradana before tea yesterday.
Twenty-four wickets fell on the first day after Sajith Sameera leading Zahira this season elected to bat first. Zahira lost three early wickets but Mohammed Shamas 83 and Mohammed Najath 60 put on 108
runs for the fourth wicket to help Zahira reach a first innings score of 218. Shamas’ 83 was scored off 89 balls with 16 fours and Najath made his 60 off 103 balls with seven fours and a six.
Sajith Sameera 4/15 and Hashmi Hussain 2/15 restricted Anuradhapura to 58 in their first innings. Zahira opted to bat a second time possibly in a bid to boost the performances of individual players and did not enforce the follow on.
Continuing from their overnight score of 40/4 they declared their second essay at 148/6 as soon as Najath reached his hundred off 97 balls with 8 fours and four sixes.
Sajith Sameera 5/19 and Hashmi Hussain 4/17 then dismissed the visitors for 64 in their second innings the innings lasting 50 minutes.
