The reduction of drug prices is a boon to patients, especially to low income group families, Health and Nutrition Minister Rajitha Senaratna said.

The minster was speaking after opening a fully fledged blood bank in a new building at the Tangalle Base Hospital.

The minister said the State of California in America also had taken steps to reduce the prices of drugs and pharmaceuticals.

He said the media does not report the positive side of the programme, but highlights only the shortcomings. He said prices of many more drugs will be reduced soon. He said it was his teacher Prof. Bibile who was instrumental in the reduction of prices of drugs, but he was unable to do it. He said 100,000 lenses for eye surgeries have been imported.

Minister Senaratna said blood examination reports can be obtained from hospitals free of charge instead of obtaining them from private sector labs.

The minister met doctors, heath officials and other staff of the Tangalle hospital and looked into shortcomings at the hospital.
