Tree generations born on the same day

Three generations of the same family have defied odds of 130,000/1 to all be born on the same day.

Dana Turnbull became the third generation in a row to be born on January 18, sharing a birthday with her mum Joy Spowart, 21, and grandmother Judie Spowart, 51.

Little Dana was due to arrive on January 20, but Joy went into a prolonged labour on January 16, with the youngster being born at 12:58am on January 18.

Joy said: “I think about a month before she was born everyone was saying ‘I bet she comes on your birthday’.

“But I didn’t want that. I wanted her to have her own day. I was convinced she would be over her due date but two days before her birthday I woke up at 4.30am with contractions. I was in labour for two days and she was born at 12.58am on my birthday. I was on gas and air at the time but I remember the midwife saying to me she is definitely going to be born on your birthday as it got closer to midnight. I think I just let out a groan.”

Dana’s proud dad Connor Turnbull, 20, who met Joy while the pair were working at a call centre in South Shields, Tyne & Wear, said: “”We were all amazed that three generations of her family now share the same birthday. Like me when I was born, Dana was also born with a full head of hair, which doesn’t happen too often. The doctors at Sunderland Royal said that it was just something that just happens. We are over the moon and she is gorgeous.”

Joy, from Murton, near Durham, added: “There were just so many coincidences with this. People have said you must have planned this, but that is simply not true. We had been trying for a long time and we about to consider fertility treatment until I suddenly feel pregnant. It was the same with my mum as she struggled to get pregnant when I was born and it just so happened to be I was born on her birthday. She had got up to open her cards, but didn’t feel great and went back to bed. About an hour later her waters broke and she was rushed to hospital. My dad who was following behind in the car missed the birth because he struggled to keep up with the ambulance.”

After finding out the staggering odds of having the three generations born on the same day, Joy said she was disappointed not to have placed a bet on the outcome.

She said: “I definitely wish I had put a pound on it. Everyone who we have told about the dates has said to us ‘don’t you wish you had gone to the bookies’, and we really do.”
