Spare parts consumers hoodwinked as Chinese parts are sold marked ‘made in Germany or Japan’

A large amount of Chinese motor spare parts which were marked as made in Germany and Japan were seized from Panchikawatta in Maradana, yesterday.

They were taken into custody during a raid conducted by Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA). The Authority has sealed the arrested items.

In facing legal action for alleged violation are thirty motor vehicle spare part outlets, CAA sources said.

Steps are being taken to produce them before the Maligawatta Magistrate once the value of seized items had been determined, they said.

CAA inspectors said they also took into custody a considerable haul of motor spare parts which were on sale without price tags.

Industry and Commerce Minister Rishad Badiudeen said the CAA has been mobilized to conduct vigorous raids on motor vehicle spare parts and the ministry expects to ensure that legitimate and quality products reach consumers.

It has been brought to our notice that some spare parts dealers in Panchikawatta are in the habit of selling Chinese parts to consumers after marking them as made in Germany and Japan products, CAA official said. “Changing the name of the product maker, in other words copyright infringement, and hoodwinking consumers is a serious violation of law,” he said. “We have been given special instructions by Minister Badiudeen to continue with the raids on motor vehicle spare parts outlets as the situation concerned is a commonplace event in the market of motor vehicle spare parts,” he said.
