Family based politics should be removed from Sri Lanka – Faiszer

“Family based politics has become a practise in Sri Lankan. If the father of a particular family is a politician, his wife or daughter will also tend to engage in politics too. This ruins someone else’s chance of coming into political field. They only intend to accomplish their own needs. Populists are originated by letting ordinary people to engage in political field in Local Governance. It is our responsibility to show them the path.” Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faiszer Musthapha made these remarks participating in a conference held at Sri Lanka Foundation Institution recently. This conference was organized by the Centre for Policy Alternatives in order to increase women’s participation in Sri Lankan Politics.

Addressing the gathering Minister Musthapha said, “At present, we can see that there is an increase of the tendency in women to engage in politics. But there are barriers for that. We should specifically identify them and solve them in order to encourage them. Women’s leadership is more appropriate to solve women’s issues, where women can represent their own issues. Challenges faced by Sri Lankan women at present should be identified and discussed. For that purpose we need intelligent women to be engaged in this task.”

Dr. Pakya Soni Saravanamuththu, Dr. Wickkramabahu Karunarathne, SLFP Women’s organization, and lot of women representing UNP attended in this event.
