Over 10,000 expected for 17th LSR Colombo Marathon

The Lanka Sportreizen, Sri Lanka's best known tour operator and organizer of Colombo Marathon expects over 10,000 runners from various countries for the 17th LSR Colombo Marathon which will be worked off on October 8. This was revealed to the media during a press briefing at the Olympic House, Colombo recently.

This event is included in the Sports Ministry's calendar and also supported by Tourism Ministry, Law & Order and Southern Development Ministry, Education Ministry, Western Provincial Council, SriLankan Airlines, Athletic Association of Sri Lanka, relevant Pradeshiya Sabhas, Municipal Councils and Three Armed Forces.

The race will start at 6.00 a.m. in front of BMICH, Colombo and will proceed through Bauddhaloka Mawatha, R.G. Senanayake Mawatha, Maitland Crescent, Horton Place, Colpetty/Sri Jayewardenepura Road, Sir Marcus Fernando Mw, Albert Crescent, Independence Avenue, Philip Gunawardena Mw, Thunmulla Junction, Bauddhaloka Mw, Jawatta Road, Ven. Muruththettuwe Ananda Himi Mw, Torrington Avenue, Bauddhaloka Mw, Maitland Place, Independence Avenue, Maitland Crescent, Maitland Place, Vidya Mw, Wijerama Mw, Bauddhaloka Mw, Borella Cemetery Junction, Baseline Road, Peliyagoda, Nawaloka Roundabout, Negombo-Colombo Road, Hekiththa Junction, Hekiththa Road, Canal Road, Bopitiya Road, Pamunugama Road up to Dunagalpitiya.

There will be six competition categories for both men and women: Fun Run (5 km and 10 km), Half Marathon (21.097 km), Full Marathon (42.195 km), Veteran’s Half Marathon and Veteran’s Full Marathon. Fun runs of 5 km and 10 km will be held in a circular route within the city limits of Colombo, which will showcase the beauty and nature of the Colombo city.

The men's and women's winners of the Full Marathon will receive USD 2,500 and air tickets each while the runner up and third place will receive USD 1,500 and USD 1,000 respectively. The total budget for the event is approximately Rs. 24.2 million in which Rs. 2.5 million will be allocated for prize money.

“The inaugural race was held in 1998 in Galle with around 190 competitors and now it has grown up to the international standard over the last 16 editions. Now it is a major event in Asian sports calendar and is the only international marathon in Sri Lanka registered with the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS),” said the founder and chief organizer of the event, Thilak Weerasinghe in a media briefing.

Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera, Western Province Chief Minister Isuru Devapriya, Chairman of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau Udaya Nanayakkara, SriLankan Airlines CEO Suren Ratwatte and SSP Indika Hapugoda too were present at the media briefing.
