Two sentenced to death after 17-year trial

Two accused in a case of murder committed 17 years ago at Wariyapola, Koswatte were sentenced to death in absentia by the Kurunegala High Court Judge Menaka Wijesundera recently.

The Judge ordered the police to arrest them and produce them before courts.The accuse Jayantha Parakrama and S.M. Leelawathie of Koswatte were charged with the murder of a 53-year-old man in the same area on March 5, 2005.

This case was trialled in absentia as the two accused did not appear in courts having been indicted.

The JMO of the Kurunegala hospital at the time doctor S.R.S. Senanaike in his evidence said that there were 2 injuries on the neck of the victim and the injury on the left was fatal.

The Judge convicted the two accused to death after a prolonged trial. Police had reported that the accused were not living the area.

The Judge ordered the police to arrest the accused and produce them before Courts.

This case had been going on for nearly 17 years.
