Principal sentenced to eight years RI for bribery

A former principal of Panadura Mahanama Navodaya College was sentenced to eight years rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court yesterday.

The is for soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs.25,000 to admit a student to the school in 2008.

High Court Judge Gihan Kulatunga observed that the prosecution has proved the accused guilty beyond a reasonable doubt on two counts.

The accused was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption on November 16, 2008 while soliciting and accepting Rs 25,000 from a parent to enroll a student.

The accused Nadeeka Perera was further ordered to pay a fine of Rs.5000 on two counts.
