LG polls: UNP to select ‘clean’ politicians: Minister Kabir Hashim

The United National Party will adopt new criteria to select candidates for the upcoming Local Government elections, Public Enterprise Development Minister Kabir Hashim said.

He said that candidates who are in association with temples and churches and other religious institutions in the village with a clean track record will be selected as candidates for the next Local Government election.

“The United National Party wants to do clean politics in the country,” he said

Minister Kabir Hashim said that the UPFA have ruled a majority number of Local government bodies in the country since 1994.

“The UPFA has been in control over many Local Government bodies in the country for the 23 years except for a short period,”he said. Many UPFA Local Government representatives who had only bicycles when they came into power, left the Local Government bodies in luxury vehicles.

Minister Hashim said that regional development activities were progressing at a slow pace as some of the Local Government representatives during the previous regime were more interested in amassing wealth by misusing public money meant for development activities.

“We have information that some members and heads of Local Government bodies had used public funds to lay concrete on roads leading to their houses. Some of them had accepted development contracts by themselves,” he said.
