Over 40,000 players in action at President’s Gold Cup Volleyball 2017

One of the most followed sporting events, the President’s Gold Cup Volleyball Championship will spike off with the participation of over 2500 teams comprising 40,000 players, in the largest volleyball tourney held in the island. This was revealed to the media during a press briefing at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo yesterday.

The President’s Gold Cup is hosted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and will conduct in four stages during a period of four months attracting teams from over 300 Grama Seva Division’s island-wide. The initial round will be worked off from September 16 at district level and the qualified teams will enter the national level competition which is to be held during the latter part of the year. The tournament which has a history spanning over two decades is powered by Dialog Axiata PLC for the 12th consecutive year.

“The President’s Gold Cup is one of the most widely followed tournaments in Lanka with participation from all provinces in the country. The intensity of the competition sets the stage to attract the best of talent from the peripheries to compete and excel at national and international level,” Volleyball Federation president and Power and Renewable Energy Minister Ranjith Siyabalapitiya said.
