Public, police must get together to control crimes: IGP

Crime can be controlled only if the public and police make collaborative effort in this regard. The media has to play a vital role in the purpose, IGP Pujith Jayasundara said.

He was speaking at a ceremony to hand over a new house to a low-income family at Yabaraluwa, Malwana on September 9 as its chief guest,

He said many criminals evade the law with public help.

“It can be curtailed if the people rejects unlawful elements and assist the police to maintain law and order,” the IGP said.

The Praja Police Ekakaya of Biyagama Police built the house at a cost of Rs. 2,100,000 assisted by donors in the.area under the “Police to the Village (Gamata Polisiya) programme.

The IGP said the police had initiated a programme to maintain harmonious relationship with law-abiding people.

“People must be made to understand that police are not their enemies. The public misjudge the Police Department because of a few police officers who do not carry out their duties lawfully, he said. The IGP said some elements attempt to disrupt communal harmony.

“The public should be vigilant in this regard and must inform the police such moves,” the IGP said.
