Scientific inspection on harmful starfish

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has directed NARA and NAQDA authorities to carry out a scientific inspection of the spread of harmful starfish species in the Eastern sea area, with the assistance of Sri Lanka Navy.

The Ministry has been informed that a certain species of starfish is causing extensive damage to corals in the eastern seabed, said the Minister.

It has also been reported that coral reefs in this area have already been damaged due to an enzyme emitted by these starfish, he added.
