The Sri Lankan Parliament is the first Parliament to appoint a committee to look into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said.

Speaking at the 12th General Assembly of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) held at Parliament yesterday, he said they had recognized the importance of female representation in all political decision making bodies.

Jayasuriya said a legislature has been passed to include 25 percent quota for women at the Local Government elections.

Deputy Speaker Thilanga Sumathipala said the budgetary allocations should be in line with SDGs to develop the nation.

He said the next budget would have a co-value against SDGs.

Social Empowerment and Welfare Minister S. B. Dissanayake, State Minister of Highways Dilan Perera and representatives from over 29 member national committees also participated.
