Railway officials warne for carrying headless body

Railways General Manager S. M. Abeywickrama, yesterday, warned officials who had reportedly carried the headless body of an individual who committed suicide in a passenger compartment. Officials, on duty in a Colombo-bound train on the Southern coastal line, had reportedly loaded the headless body of an individual who had committed suicide by jumping in front of the train near Kollupitiya into a compartment full of passengers, including schoolchildren.

The General Manager told the Daily News that he had warned relevant authorities not to repeat such mistakes, at the daily meeting yesterday.

According to regulations, officials should take the body in the guard’s wagon and hand it over to the officials at the next railway station. According to railway sources, the body had been hurriedly loaded to keep the train schedule unchanged as it was rush hour and the body was taken only for a short distance. However, Abeywickrema said he had warned relevant officials that he would not tolerate such incidents in the future and had requested them to work according to regulations at all times.
