A recent media interview held with the current President of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) showed his SAITM biased stand to the entire country. Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe had stated that an independent personality should be appointed to the position because he has understood the importance of the duties of the position well, Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said.
Addressing a press conference held at the GMOA Head Quarters in Colombo yesterday (11) he said, that now a wide opportunity has been given for the SLMC members to show their strength opposing fighting against its resident's pro SAITM behaviour while protecting their SLMC membership. Health Minister's politically motivated appointment has given this opportunity to them.
According to Dr. Aluthge, the current SLMC President has showed his shameless faithfulness towards the political party which gave him the National List nomination in 2015 General Election.
According to him, SAITM can offer MBBS degrees legally and SAITM medical students can be registered in the SLMC.
There is no big issue in the clinical training given to them. But the SLMC has already proved that all three facts are illegal, violate existing standards and not acceptable. That is why now an appeal has been filed against the Court of Appeal ruling, Dr. Aluthge added.
The GMOA is watching carefully the conduct of the SLMC President and the membership. Recently Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe pointed out the importance of appointing an unbiased person to the SLMC Presidency, he added.
