Speaking to Daily News sports, Royal College, Colombo Football Advisory and Management Committee, member and Deputy Head Prefect Fahim Hameed said although this magnificent sport was introduced to Reid Avenue back in 1895 it gained popularity in 1972 due to its immense global reputation as football became one of the nine most popular sports at Royal College. Recalling the history of football at Royal College Hameed said the oldest football encounter at Royal College was Albert Edirisinghe trophy and it was played between Royal and Mahinda College, Galle in 1984.

“But the encounter did not take place between 2003 and 2013. It was revived in 2014 after a lapse of 10 long years,”.

Royal College also looks to expand its horizons in the football arena by introducing a third trophy match to its season against Trinity College, Kandy. Hameed said this event will serve as the platform to display the immense talent of young lads who will enliven the spirit of the game for Royal College and Trinity College alike.

“The two schools have also a rich history together as a result of the iconic Bradby Shield encounter played by the respective schools’ Rugby teams,” he said .

Hameed further said Royal and Trinity also face-off in other sporting events such as Hockey for the coveted J. C. A. Corea Memorial Trophy and this bond of sportsmanship and camaraderie will grow even stronger with the inception of the Royal-Trinity football encounter.
