High incidence of broken marriages in Ambalantota

A high incidence of broken marriages resulting from wives leaving their husbands and taking their children along with them, is reported from Ambalantota according to complaints received by the Ambalantota Police’s Children and Women Bureau.

Police said underage marriages had been the main cause for this problem according to investigations carried into some of these complaints. Police said litigations into some of these cases ended up with the children of such broken marriages being sent to children’s homes.

Police added that they recently received a complaint saying that a married woman employed at a private insurance firm had been abducted by some group. But investigations revealed that the woman had eloped with another man after leaving her children with her husband.

In another incident, a husband had lodged a complaint saying that his wife, who had returned after a 13-year stint abroad, was remaining with her mother without re-uniting with him and their only daughter.

Another investigation is being held into a complaint made by a husband saying that he had been chased out by his wife who had three children by their marriage, accusing him of having a secret love affair.

The husband had also charged that the wife was having an affair with another man.

This type of conflict between husbands and wives only leave their children stranded, a Police spokesman said.

In another complaint, a woman who left for employment abroad, leaving her twin children with her husband, is reported to have abandoned the family and gone to live with her mother upon her return from abroad.
