Government compensates fishing families

Eight fishing families affected by the sudden disasters in 2017 were provided compensation amounting to Rs. 60 lakhs at the National Aquaculture Development Authority yesterday.

Compensation amounts were granted under Ceylinco Insurance and was handed over by Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Mahinda Amaraweera to the families of eight fishermen from Jaffna, Hambanthota and other districts who had been on sail and perished due to the sudden disasters.

The Minister said, “The fishing families will be provided by another compensation amount of Rs. 10 lakhs by the National Insurance Trust Fund. Also, immediate steps will be taken to provide compensation amount of Rs. two million for families affected due to the drastic weather conditions occurred in the recent past. The government has decided to render Rs. one lakh for the refurbishment of damaged fishing ships”.
