Fourteen writ petitions re-fixed for support

The Court of Appeal yesterday re-fixed for January 24 to support 14 writ petitions filed by various political parties including Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).

These parties sought a writ of Mandamus order directing the Returning Officers appointed for the relevant local authorities to accept the nomination papers delivered to Election Officers by the political parties in respect of the Local Authorities Election.

When the petitions came up before Court Appeal (President) Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justice Shiran Gunaratne, the Court was informed that the Supreme Court has dismissed several writ petitions including a petition filed by SLPP in respect of Maharagama Urban Council.

Senior Deputy Solicitor General Arjuna Obeysekara appearing for the Election Commission informed Court that there is no basis to proceed these petitions since Supreme Court has already rejected several writ petitions filed on similar grounds.

Accordingly, the Court of Appeal re-fixed the petitions for support citing it needs to peruse the order delivered by Supreme Court.

At a previous occasion, the Supreme Court dismissed two writ petitions filed by Sri Lanka Freedom Party and Jathika Janatha Pakshaya for Dehiattakandiya Pradeshiya Sabha and Colombo Municipal Council respectively.
