Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said the United National Front (UNF) leaders yesterday decided to continue the government till 2020 as it enjoys the majority in Parliament.

The Prime Minister was addressing a rally in Anuradhapura in support of the UNP candidates vying for the upcoming Local Government Elections from the Anuradhapura district yesterday.

The Prime Minister added that the UNF will work in cooperation with President Maithripala Sirisena.

“The party leaders of the UNF who brought President Maithripala Sirisena into power decided to continue the government till 2020 as the UNF is enjoying the majority in Parliament,” the Prime Minister said.

He said the government’s programme to develop the country while ensuring freedom and democratic rights of the people would continue unabated after the Local Government Elections. “People should give strength to the UNP to take forward the development endeavour of the government at the upcoming Local Government Elections,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister said UNP leaders D. S. Senanayake, Dudley Senanayake, and J.R. Jayewardene brought development to Rajarata after the kings. He said his party pioneered in bringing water to the region through the Accelerated Mahaweli Development Project.

“We are committed to protect and promote the unity within the government while ensuring the majority in Parliament. We will work in cooperation with President Maithripala Sirisena. No body should doubt this government. We are in power after the Local Government Election too,” he said
