Anuradhapura drought hit farmers compensated

The Agriculture and Agrarian Insurance Board has completed paying compensation for cultivation losses during 2016/2017 Maha season in the Anuradhapura district.

Anuradhapura Government Agent R.M. Wanninayake said 34,670 farmers who incurred losses were paid Rs. 4,525 lakhs as compensation by the Board.

Wanninayake said Rs. 40,000 per hectare would be paid for paddy, maize, big onions, soya and chilies from 2017/18 Maha season under the new compensation scheme. The Agriculture Research and Production Assistants of the District Agrarian Development Assistant Commissioner have been instructed to evaluate crop damages to be compensated under the new scheme.

Wanninayake said 150,000 drought hit farmer families in the Anuradhapura district were provided dry food valued at Rs. 1,500 million and the relief will be continued till the farmers revived their livelihoods.
