Kirama Divisional Hospital ailing

The Kirama Divisional Hospital lacks doctors, nurses and minor staff and over 400 people who seek treatment from its OPD daily undergo severe difficulties as they have to wait from morning to evening to consult a doctor and receive medicines.

The hospital has about 60 inmates at any given time and they do not receive proper treatment as the hospital lacks adequate doctors and staff.

The hospital lacks a mortuary and dead bodies are kept in wards until relatives of the dead remove the bodies. The well from where the hospital receives drinking water remains polluted. Since the hospital lacks facilities to perform post mortems, dead bodies have to be transferred to the Katuwana and Walasmulla hospitals. The hospital has no proper kitchen and its staff work at a small hut by the hospital.

Plans are afoot to set up a mortuary and a kitchen funded by the World Bank, hospital sources said.
