Ampara ready for LG polls

Ballot boxes were transported to the 529 polling booths in the Ampara district from the Ampara Urban Council yesterday.

Government and police officers will be on election duty in Ampara at the 529 polling booths and the counting centres.

Nine political parties and 16 independent groups are fielding 2,837 candidates for 20 local government bodies in the Ampara district at the Local Government elections.

The Kalmunai MC has the maximum number of candidates 559 from nine political parties and four independent groups. The Akkaraipattu Pradeshiya Sabha has the least number of seats.

Members for two Municipal Councils - Kalmunai and Akkaraipattu - Ampara Urban Council, and 17 Pradeshiya Sabhas in the Ampara district will be elected at the LG polls.

About 493,742 voters have qualified from the Ampara district to cast their votes.
