CIC Holdings PLC recently conducted a beach clean-up campaign at Dehiwala. The campaign was organized by the Industrial Solutions Cluster including Chemanex PLC one of its key trading companies, in line with its corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Despite the measures taken by the relevant authorities to curb waste mismanagement, litter has become one of the major issues plaguing the country, especially in the urban and suburban areas. The employees of CIC’s Industrial Solutions cluster contributed their time and effort to restore the pristine beauty of Sri Lanka’s golden beaches, as well as to raise awareness on the importance of keeping the environment clean and safe.
The five-hour long campaign kick-started along the coastal area extending from Wasala Road on Marine Drive up to Mount Lavinia. Coinciding with the CIC Beach Clean-up campaign, Sevanatha Urban Resource Centre, a member of USAID, implemented a waste recycling program in Dehiwala - Mt. Lavinia areas. These drives were conducted with the support of Dehiwala - Mt. Lavinia Municipal Council as well as the Coastguard.
The clean-up process was systematically executed in teams guided by a leader, where each team was assigned to pick a distinct type of waste. At the end of the drive, participants have gathered 463.5 kg of waste where majority contained biodegradable waste (250kg) and glass (164kg). A large number of recyclable PET bottles, metal and tin waste were among the collected items.
This worthy cause involved a great number of environmentally conscious volunteers who enthusiastically supported this initiative. Participants included employees from industrial Solutions, Chemanex, Nalco, Head Office and Factory. They were well supported by members of Sevanatha and the Coastguard.
