Women’s societies get 25% quota

The Provincial Councils, Local Government and Sports Ministry is to present a Cabinet paper proposing that all government procurements below Rs. 3 million allocate a 25 percent quota to women-based organisations.

Only organisations which are 100 percent run and managed by women, especially in the rural sector can apply for the above quota.

Provincial Councils, Local Government and Sports Minister Faiszer Mustapha speaking to civil society members, organisations and officials at the Ministry yesterday, informed them that they would amend government procurement guidelines to include this guideline and have a provision to recognise women-based community organisations such as ‘Kantha Kaariya Samithi’ and ‘Mahila Samithi’ in the government system.

Such organisations would need to be registered with the relevant divisional secretariat to apply.

At present they are not recognized as legitimate societies in the government procurement system which allows for community-based organisations to bid for procurements under Rs. 3 million.

The Cabinet paper is expected to be produced before Cabinet at next week’s meeting.

“We hope that through this we can economically empower rural women,” said the Minister.
