Eight youths fined for drunken driving

Kurunegala Additional Magistrate Namal Perera fined eight youths Rs.6,500 each for drunken driving, recently. They had pleaded guilty to the charges.

Meanwhile, Kalpitiya Police had arrested a suspect possessing 1.28 kilograms of cannabis at his residence. Three other suspects had been arrested afterwards for the same offence and the stock of cannabis seized was worth Rs.200,000.

Police believe the drugs had been smuggled into the country with the use of fishing trawlers.

The suspects are to be produced at the Puttalam Magistrate's Court today, a police officer in Kalpitiya told the Daily News.
