CAA officers seek Police protection during raids

The raids conducted by the Consumer Affairs Authority officers has been stalled due to the lack of security provided to them, the Chairman of the National Movement for Consumer Right’s Protection Ranjith Withanage. He said this situation has put the consumer in jeopardy.

Withanage said that with the festive season approaching, traders had commenced fleecing the customers.

“The President had instructed to ensure adequate supply of essential items during this season. However, due to the threats to the lives of raiding officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority, these officers are reluctant to carry out their raids effectively, which has led to the suspension of raids. The most recent incident is the attack of CAA officers in the Kegalle town.”

He said although the National Movement for Consumer Right’s Protection had made a request to provide police protection for these raiding officers, so far no action had been taken.

Therefore, Withanage urged the authorities to provide police protection to the CAA raiding officers so that they could carry out their raids and protect the rights of the consumer.
