A tourism promotion drive is underway in the Eastern Province to develop tourism through sports activities in the Eastern Province.
This program is being initiated by Governor Rohitha Bogollagama who is also keen to popularize Volleyball and beach Volleyball jointly with Eastern Province Tourism Bureau and Eastern Province Sports Department. As a fore runner to this program, Eastern Province Tourism Bureau sponsored a beach Volleyball tournament for Eastern Province and matches were held recently at the Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara districts beaches. “We hope to get more tourist hotels involved in this promotion,” an official from Eastern Province Tourism Bureau said.
The Batticaloa District tournament was held at the Batticaloa Kallady Beach, the Ampara District tournament was held at the Addalaichenai Beach and the Trincomalee District was held at the Trincomalee Beach.
In this final match held at the Trincomalee beach, Trincomalee Navy Volleyball Team beat Kantale Volleyball Team in the final to emerge men’s champions while Trincomalee –A Volleyball team clinched the women’s title beating Trincomalee –B Volleyball team.
Eastern Province Education, IT Education, Pre School Education, Sports, Cultural Affairs, Youth Affairs and Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Ministry Secretary, I.K.G. Muthubanda presided over this function while Eastern Province Governor, Rohitha Bogollagama was participated as the chief guest at the award ceremony.
The Secretary to the Eastern Province Governors’, J.S.D.M. Asanka Abeywardena, Eastern Province Chief Ministry’s Secretary, U.L.A.Azees, EP Health Ministry’s Secretary, A.H.M. Ansar, EP Agriculture Ministry’s Secretary, K.Sivanathan, Deputy Chief Secretary (Admin) H.E.M.W.G. Dissanayakke, Deputy Chief Secretary (Personnel & Training), J.J Muralitharan, Batticaloa District Secretary, M. Uthayakumar, Heads of the Local Government Bodies, Departmental Heads, Sports Ministry Officials, Forces, Sports Officers were all participated as the guests.
