Steps would be taken to bring down medicine prices this year; Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said.

He added that his ministry was able to reduce the price of 73 types of medicine last year, and that he intended to make it 100 this year.

The minister said he intended to curtail hospital charges of the private sector and would be looking into the possibility of introducing a charging chart for private hospitals to follow.

He was speaking at a function to celebrate the new year at his ministry, yesterday.

He commended the services rendered by officials operating in all sectors and invited them to do a better job for the sake of the country and its people. “Our biggest challenge is the prevention of the spreading of illnesses, as well as to protect and promote good health practices,” he said.

“We know what happened during the 53-day government and how it had hit the health sector hard. We need not kneel for money offered by companies operating with ulterior motives; we should give preference to good health, and that is what the nation expects from the health sector,” he added.

The minister said, “We gained international recognition for our health services, and we must keep that flag flying.” State Minister Faisal Cassim, Ministry Secretary Wasantha Perera, and Health Services Director-General Jaliya Jasinghe were present.
