The Special Task Force Organised Crime Prevention Unit which searched a car on a tip-off near the Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya in Panagoda, Homagama at around 10.45 am on December 31 found 60 grams and 550 milligrams of heroin and a live hand grenade inside the vehicle. One person was arrested in connection with the incident, according to the Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara.
The arrested suspect was identified as 33-year-old resident of Samanala Uyana, Athurugiriya.
The Police Spokesman said that investigations had revealed that the arrested suspect is a close associate of a notorious drug kingpin in the Ratmalana area named Sinharage Amal Chaminda Silva alias Anju and is said to have been handling the distribution of drugs for Dhanushka Thotuwila alias Saima, who is a also notorious criminal.
The arrested suspect has been handed over to the Narcotics Bureau for further investigations and was produced at the Homagama Magistrate’s Court yesterday (01).
