Colombo Port reaches seven million TEU container throughputs

The Colombo Port reached the seven million TEU container throughputs at the end of 2018 (December 31) marking its highest and best performance since 1973.

The 7th million container was brought to Colombo Port by the MV CPO Hamburg ship from the Chennai harbor, recently. A ceremony was held under the patronage of Ports, Shipping and Southern Development Minister Sagala Ratnayaka, and the Ministry Secretary and Sri Lanka Ports Authority Chairman Parakrama Dissanayake at the Jaya Container Terminal of Colombo Port on Monday. Minister Ratnayaka said the government has focused on formulating policies for the development of the shipping and trade sectors.

Suitable and balanced business promotion policies would be introduced covering the shipping system by the government, the minister added.

The minister and the Secretary congratulated all those who supported to achieve this task.

In the first half of 2018, Colombo Port was ranked the world’s fastest growing port among the top 30 container ports. The SLPA was also awarded with the ‘Port Authority of the Year – 2018’ by the Global Port Forum in February last year.

The performance of all three terminals of Colombo Port, namely the Jaya Container Terminal, South Asia Gateway Terminal, and the Colombo International Container Terminal are carrying out their marketing strategies based on a MoU.

Colombo Port reached the six million TEU container throughputs in 2017.

The transshipment TEU performance of the port has increased by 19.3 percent in 2018.
