Over 500 poachers netted last year

Nawagattegama Police took into custody a 62-year-old poacher with seven locally manufactured guns and two kilogrammes of venison in Rajawigama on Tuesday.

The Police found the guns which were hidden in a hut of a chena and in a tree hollow.

The Police investigations have revealed that he had been hunting rare wild animals for over five years.

Officer-in-Charge IP Navin Indrajith Dayananda told the media that the suspect and the seized guns were to be produced before the Anamaduwa Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Nearly 567 poachers had been arrested from the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts during the last year and all of them found guilty by court, a senior police chief in Kurunegala told the Daily News.

‘IGP Pujith Jayasundara has launched a special operation countrywide to arrest illegal firearms since Tuesday, January 1 which will continue for three months,’ he added. All DIGs, ASPs and SPs from all Police Stations and the STF have already been instructed to look for all illegal firearms in their respective divisions.

He has taken this move after considering the recently reported murders and shooting countrywide.
