Media stifling real issues from public - JVP Leader

The real problems of the people are stifled and fake news is given prominence by the media, JVP Leader Anura Dissanayake complained.

Addressing the first press conference of the year at the JVP headquarters in Battaramulla yesterday, the JVP Leader was critical that certain media organizations have become a prey of various political groups and that they hide the real issues of the people in their quest to appease those groups.

He said the New Year resolution of the JVP is to persevere to bring the real issues of the people to limelight. “There is no social dialogue on contemporary issues affecting the people. The media institutions decide the political dynamics of the country and the topics for public discourse. The media behaviour during the 50-day political coup was a proof to this allegation. Journalists earn very meagre salaries, yet no media institution creates a discussion on their very own problem. The real problems of farmers, fishing community, industrialists, unemployed youth, workers in the state and private sectors are suppressed.Fake issues are being created to cater to the needs of two political camps,” he noted.

The JVP Leader pointed out that the state media have always been used as trumpets of the existing Government, and that the state media have profusely been misused for political activities. “Successive Governments have used various strategies to tame media organisations and the latest strategy is to deprive media organisations of public sector advertisements if they do not toe the line,” he commented.

The JVP Leader also urged the media not to report misleading comments by various politicians on the Constitutional reforms process as those false alarms create a fear psychosis among the public. He pointed out that any constitutional amendment requires the two thirds majority in Parliament and approval of the people at a referendum.
