Beruwela Heroin haul: Three suspects further remanded

Dileep Susantha, Mahomed Fazeer and Duleep Prasanna who were arrested with over 231 kg of heroin on the Beruwala beach were reremanded till January 11 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne yesterday. On a previous occasion, the Colombo Chief Magistrate granted approval for police to detain the suspects for seven days and question. They were arrested with 231 kg of heroin in their possession at the Beruwala Beach.

The Police Narcotics Bureau detected 231 kg 54 g of heroin, in 214 packs concealed in large sugar bags. PNB officials informed the Court that the suspects have had connections with The Seychelles and Pakistan for a long period.

Attorney Mohomed Ismail appearing on behalf of the second suspect stated that his client was the owner of this trawler and he did not know anything about the content of the parcels. He pleaded that his client be granted bail. PNB officials said the two trawlers which belonged to the suspect and Rs.5.9 million cash that the suspect had earned from heroin racketeering are currently in Police custody. The Magistrate ordered PNB officials to submit the charges which they filed against the three suspects on the next hearing date separately. The Magistrate also ordered the PNB to produce a report on the progress of the investigation, on the next hearing day. The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for January 11.
