Kurunegala Chief Magistrate Sampath Hewawasam, fined five suspects including lorry drivers and motorcyclists each Rs.10,500 who pleaded guilty of violating road rules in the Kurunegala district recently.
Wellawa Police had made these arrests on the Kurunegala - Wellawa main road during the festive season. They pleaded guilty for driving without a valid driving license or insurance certificates and also driving under the influence of liquor.
Their driving licenses were suspended for one month. The offenders were sentenced to a one-month jail term suspended for five years.
A police team led by Officer-in-Charge IP Ranjith Premasiri prosecuted.
About 1,876 drunken drivers had been arrested by the Police during the past 15 days in the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts, a senior police chief told the Daily News yesterday.
