Suspect held for decapitating wife

A husband suspected to have gone into hiding after decapitating his wife and carrying her severed head along with him was arrested by Ratnapura Police at the Rilagala Estate in Kalawana, recently.

The suspect was produced before Acting Ratnapura Magistrate Gamini Pushpakumara and remanded until January 7.

The victim was identified as Periyamuniyandi Vasantha Kumari, a 40-year-old mother of two and a resident of Outer Circular Road, Ratnapura.

Police, filing a B report in court, said investigations revealed that the victim and her husband had been watching TV until 1.00pm on November 29 before the tragedy occurred.

The husband, fleeing the house with the severed head after the murder, had been recorded on CCTV camera footage of surrounding houses.

After interrogating the suspect following his arrest, they were able to find the woman’s severed head, which was hidden in a jungle.
