Moderawila public library opened

Panadura Urban Council (UC) Chairman Nandana Gunathilaka (UNP) said many schoolchildren do not use public libraries. Therefore, they canot improve their knowledge through reading. They spend their leisure time on television and social media such as Facebook.

He was addressing a ceremony held at the Panadura, Moderawila Public Library after its renovation on Tuesday, January 1.

The Panadura UC has spent Rs 1.8 million to renovate the Moderawila Old Public Library.

‘The Urban Council had also allocated more funds to renovate and develop the public libraries under the purview of the Council to help those interested in improving their knowledge with the use of valuable books during their leisure hours,’ the Chairman added.

‘Though a few students improve themselves by following social media for their betterment, some get addicted to the Facebook unnecessarily and in time to come, they may become bad hats to the society,’ he pointed out.

He said that this was a common issue faced by children as well as parents. Therefore, he requested students living in Panadura to use public libraries as that could pave their way to become good citizens one day.

UNP Councillor Janaka Soysa said that during his childhood days, he improved his knowledge through the Moderawila Public Library which was constructed by late UNP Chairman Cyril Salgado in 1975.

The Councillor had requested the Chairman for the renovation of the library for which the Chairman allocated funds. UNP Councillor Anura Wijepala and Librarian S. Surangi, in their speeches, thanked Panadura UC for renovating this library.
